Amy Schumer is going to play Barbie - yes, the doll - in a film

Oh!

AMY SCHUMER IS reportedly going to be bringing one of the most iconic toys of all-time to life in a new film.

Deadline reports that the comedian is in talks to star in Barbie, a movie based on the classic children’s toy.

And yes, we’re talking about this Barbie.

While playing a blonde doll might seem a little at odds with Schumer’s feminist politics, it sounds like the planned Barbie movie is all about promoting individuality and self-acceptance.

Per Deadline:

Schumer will play a character who lives in Barbieland, among all of the various Barbie characters beloved by doll collectors (there are dolls covering over 180 careers). In a fish-out-of-water story reminiscent of films like Splash and Big, Schumer’s Barbie gets kicked out, basically because she’s not perfect enough, is a bit eccentric and doesn’t quite fit the mold. She then goes on an adventure in the real world and by the time she returns to Barbieland to save it, she has gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside.

Interesting.

The news has been warmly received by many who are eager to see Barbie redefined for a new generation.

But it has also attracted the ire of people who don’t believe that Schumer fits the mould of a traditional Barbie. (We would argue that not looking like a real-life Barbie is precisely why Schumer’s casting makes sense, but hey.)

And that’s led to a lot of unsavoury body-shaming tweets.

*eyeroll*

Meanwhile, Hilary Winston, the film’s writer, tweeted last night that while Schumer’s casting has yet to be confirmed, she wrote the film with the comedian in mind.

Well, it’s piqued our curiosity anyway.

Let’s just hope that Aqua re-release Barbie Girl if and when this film goes ahead, yeah?
